obey in nyc

Faesthetic friend and contributor Shepard Fairey – aka Obey Giant – has a show at New York’s Deitch Projects (annoying music in link) opening the 1st of May.  The show, which reportedly features around 150 new works, will be the last exhibition Jeffery Deitch does in NYC before shuttering the soho gallery and moving west to take the helm of the Los Angeles MoCA.  To promote the show, Fairey installed a large mural at the corner of Bowery and Houston.  The mural, which covered over a piece by the Brazilian twins Os Gemeos (who are also repped by Deitch) has already attracted a lot of attention, most of it from graffiti writers who feel as if Shep’s lost his edge.

More from: The New York Times

Also: If you’re in NYC and want to hit what should be a good time – Shepard will be DJ’ing with A-Trak at a dim sum restaurant-turned-nightclub in Chinatown following Saturday’s opening.

the last time i ran into mbw – he was smoking marlboro lights outside of his installation at a fader sponsored cmj party (and instructing an assistant on where to paste). it was here that he told me of his plans for a large scale nyc show. on an assignment the other day, i ran into about 25 posters in ny’s meat packing district…from the looks of it, the show will open soon in a vacant warehouse on 9th avenue near little w. 12th.
